What does Somatic mean anyway?

The Somatic buzz word...

Hello Friends!

As I entered my 50's a few years ago, I expected a few things. I expected to notice effects of changing hormones, and perhaps the slowing of my metabolism. What I didn't expect, was an increasing muscle weakness, increasing fatigue, and  tighter muscles and connective tissue.  To be honest, this came as a surprise! Can any of you relate?

This sent me on yet another research path, and I have learned so much. As we age, we start to feel the effects of our nervous system regulation, or more evidently, our nervous system dysregulation, more intensely. Over time, our bodies have learned to brace when there is perceived stress. Most are operating in a fight/flight/freeze/fawn response more often than not, and are not aware of it. This led me to studies on the importance of circadian rhythm, clean water, light exposure, and grounding to name a few. I love getting back to basics, and more to come on these.

The primary way to address the general tightening of the body as we age is through Somatic practices. What does this even mean anyway?

Somatic means "of or relating to the body". In wellness practices, we are talking about paying attention to your internal, felt sense or experience in the body. Not just thinking about it, but FEELING IT. Where you feel tension or ease, heaviness or tingling, where your breath goes, how it changes, how emotions show up in your body, your body's responses and more.

Over the past few years I have learned so much about my body and my stress response. In doing so, I have been able to shift those responses through my practice. My body is showing me the benefits of that! I know I have so much more learning to do, but if this resonates with you, I hope you consider joining me in my NEW Somatic Strength class. Learn to work with your body, and build capacity with kindness.

Wednesdays at 6:30pm. We start 9/9.

With Love and Light,

Lori
